New Jersey based artist exploring personal cosmology and the light emanating from within through drawing, painting and sculpture.
Statement
My drawings are energetic explorations of the light that radiates from within. In this series of oil pastel Sgraffito drawings, I create talismanic images that express a personal cosmology. The Sgraffito technique, where layers of pigment are applied and scraped away, allows me to make gestural strokes, almost as if sculpting with wet clay. I’m drawn to creating symbols that are infused with and surrounded by vibrant, energetic space, almost as if submerged in water. There’s a playful, childlike quality to the process of scraping away dark surface colors to reveal bold, vivid hues underneath. Through this intuitive practice, I engage in a process of discovery and communication, exploring the energy, color, vibration, and emotion within.
Biography
Joseph Goldfedder is a visual artist based in West Trenton, New Jersey. His work is guided by intuition and an exploration of the flow of energy, using drawing as a means to transcend the ordinary and access a higher plane of experience. Goldfedder’s visual language is primordial and dreamlike, representing essential states of being. In his current series of oil pastel Sgraffito drawings, he carves through layers of pigment, allowing discovery and chance to guide the emergence of unexpected colors and forms.While initially trained as a fine artist, Goldfedder’s travels through New Mexico inspired him to pursue acupuncture—a practice that deepened his understanding of the connection between science, creativity, and healing. This experience reshaped his approach to art, as both his acupuncture practice and his artwork are influenced by the flow of Qi, or energy, throughout the body.Goldfedder holds a BFA from the University of the Arts, an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a CMIP (Certified Medical Intuitive Practitioner) from The Practical Path Training Program.
